Does Reddit Affect ChatGPT Recommendations? What the Data Says

What the published data says about Reddit and ChatGPT recommendations: the licensing deals, the citation studies, and what a compliant Reddit presence actually does for AI visibility.

By Emma Sivess · Head of GEO, Lore

Reddit does affect ChatGPT recommendations, and unusually for this field, we can point at documented evidence rather than folklore. There is a signed data partnership between Reddit and OpenAI giving ChatGPT access to real-time Reddit content. There are citation studies measuring exactly how often AI search tools lean on Reddit threads. And in the generative engine optimization (GEO) work we do, also called answer engine optimization (AEO), Reddit shows up as one of the three arms of visibility: the brand-mention arm, where third parties confirm what your own site claims. In this piece I will walk through what the published data actually says, what it does not say, and what a compliant Reddit presence does for a brand that wants to be in AI answers.

The paper trail: Reddit is licensed into the engines

Start with the part that is contractual rather than inferred. In February 2024, Reuters reported Reddit's content licensing deal with Google, worth about $60 million a year, giving Google access to Reddit data for AI training. In May 2024, Reddit and OpenAI announced their own partnership: OpenAI accesses Reddit's Data API, which the announcement describes as providing real-time, structured content to ChatGPT and new products, particularly on recent topics.

Read those two announcements together and the practical meaning is hard to miss. The companies building the answer engines paid substantial sums specifically for Reddit's conversations. Buyer discussions in your category on Reddit are inside the training corpus and available to live retrieval, at the platform level, by design. The question stopped being whether Reddit matters to AI answers and became how much and in what shape.

What the citation data says

The best public measurement I know of is Semrush's study of 248,000 Reddit posts cited in AI search results, drawn from 217,000 prompts across Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and SearchGPT (ChatGPT's web-search mode), with data refreshed in October 2025. Four findings are worth your attention.

**Reddit sits near the top of the citation tables everywhere.** In that dataset it was the most-cited domain on Perplexity (4% share), second on SearchGPT (13% share), and third on Google AI Mode (9%). I would treat any single percentage as a snapshot rather than a constant, because the engines adjust constantly. The position is the finding that matters: in this data Reddit outranks almost every brand's own site as a source the engines reach for.

**The engines paraphrase rather than quote.** Semantic similarity between AI answers and the cited Reddit posts averaged 0.53 to 0.54, high enough to show the answer draws on the thread, nowhere near verbatim copying. The engines are synthesising the discussion, which means the sentiment and substance of what gets said about you matters more than any single wording.

**Popularity barely matters.** Most cited posts had fewer than 20 upvotes and fewer than 20 comments. This is the finding that surprises people most. A small, substantive thread in a niche subreddit, answering exactly the question a buyer later asks ChatGPT, can be retrieved and cited. A relevant thread in a modest community is enough.

**Q&A threads dominate.** Over half of cited content came from question-and-answer threads. Which makes sense once you remember what the engine is doing: someone asked it a question, and a thread structured as question-plus-answers is the closest raw material on the web.

Why the engines trust Reddit at all

Here is the mechanism underneath the numbers, and it is the same one I keep coming back to in this series: every business says it is the best, so the engines lean on sources that do the honest comparison work for them. Reddit is, for all its chaos, a place where real users compare products, complain, recommend, and correct each other, with no brand controlling the outcome. That independence is exactly what makes it useful to a model trying to be the objective broker.

This is why Reddit belongs in the brand-mention arm of the three-arm model we use (content, technical, brand mentions). Your own site can be brilliantly structured and still only ever be your account of yourself. Third-party discussion is corroboration, and in our client work the visibility wins compound when both are present. BizScout, one of our published case studies, built 450+ AI mentions over twelve months, and ChatGPT now cites them as a go-to source for business buyers. Third-party mentions at that scale are exactly the corroboration layer a brand's own site cannot supply for itself.

What this means you should actually do

The data supports a calmer playbook than the growth-hack version you may have seen pitched.

**Find where your buyers already ask.** A handful of subreddits carry most of the buying conversation in any category. Read them before you post anything; every community has its own rules and its own allergy to marketing.

**Participate honestly, with substance.** Answer real questions with genuinely useful detail. Be transparent about who you are; disclosure done well earns trust rather than costing it. The threads that get cited are the ones that would deserve citation from a human editor too.

**Aim at questions, since Q&A gets retrieved.** If over half of citations come from question threads, thoughtful answers to the questions your buyers actually ask are the highest-value contribution you can make.

**Never confuse participation with placement.** Astroturfed threads and undisclosed promotion get removed by moderators, and a removed thread is invisible to every crawler. Worse, communities remember. The compliant route is slower and it is the only one that compounds.

**Keep it in proportion.** Reddit is one corroboration channel, and citation patterns move as the engines adjust their sources. A strategy balanced across your own content, technical access, and a spread of third-party mentions survives those shifts; a strategy that is all Reddit does not.

The honest caveats

What the data does not say: it does not say Reddit mentions cause recommendations in any directly attributable way. Citation studies measure retrieval, and training-layer influence is not observable from outside. It does not say every category behaves alike; audience and geography change where buyers discuss, and some B2B niches barely exist on Reddit. And nothing here works if the engines cannot read your own site in the first place, because Reddit corroboration needs something to corroborate. The mechanics of that access problem are in our piece on [how ChatGPT chooses which brands to recommend](/blog/how-does-chatgpt-choose-brands).
