AEO Services: What Answer Engine Optimization Includes
What answer engine optimization services include when the vendor is doing real work: the audit, the technical access review, the content and validation arms, the measurement, and honest guidance on tools, pricing, and choosing a provider.
Answer engine optimization services are the packaged version of one job: getting your brand named and cited when an AI system answers your buyers' questions. The discipline trades under two labels, answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO), and the proposal you receive will contain the same work whichever acronym sits on the cover. If the category itself is new to you, the hub guides on [what answer engine optimization is](/blog/what-is-answer-engine-optimization) and [what generative engine optimization is](/blog/what-is-generative-engine-optimization) cover the foundations. This piece covers the purchase: what a real engagement contains, what the tools can and cannot tell you, and how to judge a provider before the retainer starts.
The commercial case is one we publish on our own site: organic search traffic is down roughly 30% across the board as [AI answers](/blog/patterns-that-keep-startups-out-of-ai-answers) absorb clicks, and the AI referrals that do land convert at roughly 3 to 6x the rate of traditional organic visitors. The clicks that remain carry more value each. That is the market condition every AEO proposal is responding to, and it is why the category has filled with vendors faster than buyers can evaluate them.
What is answer engine optimization? The definition worth keeping
Answer engine optimization is the work of earning a place inside AI-composed answers. When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google's AI Overviews which provider to choose, the engine composes a short answer from sources it has crawled and learned to trust. AEO makes your brand one of the sources it reaches for. Classic SEO earned you a position on a results page and the buyer did the reading. Here the engine reads on the buyer's behalf and recommends a short list of names. Being absent from that shortlist is a quieter failure than a page-two ranking ever was, because you never see the answers you were left out of.
Webflow University runs a good free introduction to AEO if you want the category explained from a platform's seat, and HubSpot has published its own take on the discipline. Both are worth a read for calibration. What follows is the practitioner's view of what the service itself should contain.
The five workstreams a real engagement covers
**1. A baseline audit.** Before anyone optimises anything, the vendor should show you how the engines answer your commercial prompts today: whether you are mentioned, whether you are cited, and which competitor holds the standing recommendation. My opinion of your positioning does not matter here, and in honesty neither does yours. The audit is where real query and competition data enters the engagement, and it becomes the scoreboard every later report answers to.
**2. A technical access review.** An engine cannot cite a page its crawler never fetched. The most frequent finding when clients arrive with us is AI crawlers blocked by default in robots.txt, usually a CMS preset nobody has revisited. The fix is cheap and the cost of missing it is severe. The review should also cover indexing, site speed, internal linking, and metadata, because the foundations carry both classic search and AI visibility at once.
**3. Citation-ready content.** Engines lift passages that stand alone: self-contained definitions, honest comparisons that name alternatives, claims with evidence attached, and deep coverage of buyer pain points beyond the money pages. Human editors are the line in the sand. AI-assisted drafting is normal, and unedited machine output shipped at volume is the modern black hat. Valueless content loses on this surface the same way link farms eventually lost in classic search, and I have tracked algorithm history long enough to watch that pattern repeat.
**4. Third-party validation.** Every business says it is the best, so engines weigh sources you do not control. Independent coverage explaining what you do and who you serve is what shifts which brands get cited. In an engagement this means digital PR, backlink-generating press work, and authentic, compliant participation in the community spaces engines draw on, Reddit included. Our own receipts show the shape this takes: BizScout accumulated over 450 AI mentions across the year their programme ran, and ChatGPT now cites them as a go-to source for business buyers. Those mentions accumulated over the programme and were reported month by month as association with the work, never as claimed causation.
**5. Measurement with a named method.** There is no rank tracker convention for AI answers yet, so the vendor must tell you exactly how they will measure: which engines, which prompts, what counts as a mention versus a citation, and how share of voice is reported against competitors. Numbers should always arrive paired with movement over a stated window. Tides Mental Health at 4.7x organic traffic growth across five months, with AI engines beginning to recommend them for anxiety treatment, is the reporting shape to demand from anyone you hire.
These workstreams map onto the three arms I walk every client through: content, technical, and brand mentions. Most businesses running this in-house get content roughly right and leave the other two arms untouched, which is why DIY programmes stall. If you want the buyer's version of this list with the sales-call questions attached, the [GEO services checklist](/blog/geo-services-checklist) is written for exactly that meeting, and the [day-in-the-life view of what a GEO agency does](/blog/what-a-geo-agency-does) shows the same work from the delivery side.
If video is your preferred format for the fundamentals, Ahrefs has published a free AEO course, and the opening lesson from their team is a solid vendor-neutral primer on what the discipline covers before you sit through anyone's sales deck.

Tools, software, and where the truth lives
Buyers ask what the best AEO software is, and the honest answer is that the category has no established winner. Monitoring platforms such as Profound track brand mentions across engines, and the classic suites, Ahrefs and Semrush among them, have bolted on AI visibility features. All of them are useful for direction. None of them is the source of truth. When Google Search Console is connected, it outweighs every third-party tool for what search is doing to your site, especially for newer sites where third-party indexes run thin, and GA4 tells you what converts. A chat assistant is a fine sounding board for strategy, and without connected search data it lacks the nuance of what people ask and why. Any vendor whose measurement plan is built entirely on one tool's dashboard should be asked what happens when that dashboard and Search Console disagree.
Pricing, providers, and the listicle problem
On price, the honest guidance is structural rather than numeric. Fees follow scope: audit and monitoring alone costs less than a programme that adds content production, technical remediation, and digital PR. The two arms buyers most often skip in-house, technical and validation, are the two that justify outside help, so a proposal that quietly drops them is cheap for a reason.
On providers, you will meet the same landscape we do. Agencies such as Marcel Digital and NoGood sell dedicated AEO services, roundups from Semai and Elsner rank the top AEO companies of 2026, and Reddit threads asking for the best AEO agency fill with replies from the agencies themselves. Treat the listicles as a directory rather than a verdict, because most are assembled from submissions and sponsorships rather than measured output. The better filter is the one this article gives you: ask each candidate for their baseline method, their crawler-access process, their editorial standard, their validation approach, and a sample report with movement over a stated window. A vendor who answers all five comfortably has done the work before. In full transparency, this work takes months to snowball whoever you hire, and anyone promising a named slot in a ChatGPT answer by a fixed date is guessing at your expense.
One more thing worth saying because so many vendors imply the opposite: traditional search has not gone away. Search expanded, and your surface area has to expand with it. Done properly, one programme serves both surfaces, and a provider who tells you to abandon classic SEO is asking you to vacate a market your competitors still profit from.
The short version
Answer engine optimization services should contain five workstreams: a baseline audit, a technical access review, citation-ready content with human editors, third-party validation, and monthly measurement with a named method. AEO and GEO are two labels on the same purchase. Tools give you direction, and Search Console settles any disagreement between them. Pricing follows scope, listicles are directories, and the vendor's measurement method is the only page of the proposal that makes the rest verifiable.
